Dominican Sister Barbara Reid, a prominent biblical scholar, is scheduled to speak at 7 p.m. Oct. 14 about women of the New Testament.
Mary Foley, pastoral life coordinator at the Elmhurst parish, is planned to speak at 7 p.m. Nov. 4 about "Women in Ecclesial Ministry Today."

Community leaders share lessons

JOLIET— Two community leaders recently shared their insights with the students of St. Mary Nativity School in Joliet. Larry Walsh, Will County Chief Executive, discussed the governmental workings of the community. Walsh spoke to grades 4-8 about the responsibility of citizenship. He related his position as county administrator and as an Illinois senator explaining his representation of the people. Walsh also fielded questions about the upcoming presidential elections.

Another leader, Dottie Mueller discussed art history. The art teacher from Joliet Junior College then offered a lesson on Impressionist Art.

In other school news, Michael Bannon, Allison Buldak, Alex Buldak, Adam Gregurich, Matt Mammosser and Christian Pantoja plan to attend the Regional Science Fair held march 7 at the University of St. Francis in Joliet. Their projects were awarded outstanding merit. Ian Buchman and Joseph Dowling received first place awards.

Spelling bee buzzes

LOCKPORT—On Jan. 29, St. Joseph School in Lockport held its annual all-school spelling bee. Seventh grader, Kevin Carlton, was winner of the competition. Claiming second place was eighth grader, Anna Bryniarski, with sixth grader, Eric Dubek, placing third. Alternate is sixth grader Sarah Brightmore.

Also taking part in the bee were sixth grader Rachel Weiss, seventh graders Megan Cavanaugh and Aubrey Ficek, and eighth graders Amanda Lee and Kelly Brightmore.

Carlton, Bryniarski, and Dubek moved on to the next step of competition Feb. 5, when the Will County Private Schools’ Spelling Bee was held in the St. Joseph Activity Center.
