A winter wonderland at Montini

Published Feb 28, 2008

With the temperature below zero and snow covering the ground all around, Montini began turnabout week on Jan. 28 with a Mass and ended the week with snow. The weather was perfect to go hand-in-hand with the theme for the week, but the actual dance went unaffected by the bitter weather.

To get everyone ready for turnabout week, the court was announced at the senior lunch the week prior. The members of the 2008 turnabout court included Chris Matson, James Herman, Chuck Porcelli, Andrew Mach, and Vinnie Lawdenski. The court had to wear medals for the next week to let the school know who they were.

Monday of turnabout week was called, “White Out Day,” and this was a day for students to look their best and find their nicest white clothing to wear for Mass and to get spirit points. Tuesday was the day everyone voted for turnabout king and the theme for the day was, “Winter Sports Day.” The students were to dress as their favorite winter sports player or as themselves in their sports uniform. Wednesday was seventh grade step-up day, a day where seventh graders from local grade schools come to shadow Montini students and play games in the gym to get a better idea of what it is like to be a student at Montini. The theme for the day was class color day, and each class dressed in their respective color. At the assembly that day, the turnabout king was announced to be Porcelli. Thursday was “Christmas Character Day,” where people dressed up as different characters from Christmas time. Friday was ironically “Snow Day,” where students were to dress as they would in a snow day, but to everyone’s surprise, there was a real snow day. The dance began at 7 p.m. on Saturday, and all of the participants looked beautiful in their dresses and suits.

A special addition to turnabout this year was the toilet paper drive. Students competed for spirit points by bringing in toilet paper to benefit a shelter in Brookfield. The drive was run similar the Golden Gobbler, where students brought toilet paper to the tables for their respective class. The overall turn out was great for Montini as a whole.

One important aspect of color day was the seniorwear. During homecoming this year, there had been a mix up with the senior shirt, and the wrong slogan was printed on the back. But Michael Kisicki promised to get every senior the correct shirt free of charge by turnabout week. And he lived up to his word. Monday of turnabout week, seniors got their red shirts with the correct motto, “We’re Kind of a Big Deal.”
