Generosity is key for thankful Immaculate Conception students
Published Dec 7, 2007It is estimated that, on average, an American will eat about 13.6 pounds of turkey a year. Undoubtedly, most of this turkey consumption takes place during the Thanksgiving season. In many cultures, Thanksgiving is a time of year for people to gather around a table to share in the joy of a hearty meal and a loving family. Also, Thanksgiving is an occasion for many to show their appreciation for those around them, giving thanks to their family and friends.
Although these are all positive things to celebrate, what many people overlook is an opportunity. Thanksgiving is an opportunity to provide the less fortunate with a chance to have a memorable and hearty Thanksgiving meal. At Immaculate Conception High School, students wanted to help others and seized the occasion to give. Every Tuesday and Thursday, Christian service leaders persistently visited homerooms to collect money for the needy. Many students were compliant and allowed the giving spirit to engulf them, donating day after day.
After four, short weeks of contributions, IC was able to purchase 37 turkey gift cards for numerous families in need of help. Surprisingly, the freshmen class was the top donor, giving nearly $200 in change.
Hopefully, the IC students’ generosity allowed some families to have an enjoyable Thanksgiving this year.
