Immaculate Conception reflects on Christmas giving

Published Jan 14, 2008

With the Christmas season in full swing at Immaculate Conception High School, students became filled with the spirit of giving. Usually, around this time of year, people are busy shopping for their siblings, parents and relatives, but the members of the IC student body were out buying presents for a few more people.

When it was time for the National Honor Society’s Christmas service project, the club decided to include the rest of the school, hoping to help out a very special organization. For the month of December, students collected money and toys daily. Once Dec. 19, 2007, rolled around, a three-car caravan full of toys estimated at over $1,200 made its way to Burr Ridge. Once they arrived in Burr Ridge, they were delivered to a storefront with huge painted letters reading, “Toy Express.” It is at this store where a very special project occurs.

For the past decade, the Toy Express has made the effort to provide needy families of the Chicago suburbs with the chance to make their Christmas special. Usually, when toy drives occur, toys are given to a family in an impersonal manner. With the help of Toy Express and surrounding schools, Toy Express sets up a store that allows nearly 600 families to freely shop among a sea of presents. Families can choose from gifts covering numerous tables, including educational toys, clothes and books. Although Toy Express’ goal is not to provide the families with their entire wish lists, their efforts do allow families to have a good base for their Christmas presents; it allows them to use money that they would have otherwise spent on presents for things such as bills.

Hopefully, the gifts donated not only by ICHS but also by other schools have allowed families to enjoy their Christmas season and breathe a little easier when it comes time to pay their bills.
